Honoring Patricia “Patty” Hagstrom
Silkscreen Artist

As Festival Director, I have had the privilege of meeting countless artists over the past 14 years, but Patricia “Patty” Hagstrom will always stand out as one of my favorites. Patty was truly a bright light—one of those rare, one-of-a-kind souls who never met a stranger and who poured her heart into every step of her creative process.
Her work was as vibrant and full of life as she was. Through her intricate silk-screen technique, Patty translated our aquatic environment into a rich, colorful world of sea life, water birds, and tropical florals. The long, labor-intensive process she loved so much demanded patience, precision, and joy—and Patty embraced it fully. She often joked that a day in her studio could feel like either Christmas morning or April Fool’s Day, depending on whether the paints, the Texas humidity, and her stamina decided to cooperate.
Born in the mountains of Pennsylvania, Patty’s deep appreciation for nature was woven into everything she created. Her art was not only visually striking but also deeply empathetic, designed to be experienced in partnership with the viewer. She once said, “With you as the viewer, I can create a visual experience. This empathy with nature could not exist without the two of us.”
This year at ARToberFEST, we are profoundly grateful to honor Patty’s legacy with the blessing of her family and friends. Her laughter, warmth, and artistry touched so many, and though she may be gone, her spirit will forever live on through her work and the memories she left behind.
May Patty never be forgotten.
With all my love and great appreciation,
Sarah Piel
